Foundations of Hospice and End-of-Life Care

Hospice care is a clinical philosophy focused on comfort, dignity, and quality of life for patients facing terminal illness. Sound practice rests on a clear understanding of the philosophy, structure, and team that deliver it. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the philosophy and goals of hospice care, recognize the structure of hospice services, understand the role of the interdisciplinary team, and identify the clinical features of end-of-life symptom care. What you will learn: - The philosophy and history of the hospice movement and palliative care - The eligibility criteria and structure of hospice services in common health systems - The role of the interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, aides, and volunteers - The clinical features of common end-of-life symptoms including pain, dyspnea, nausea, and agitation - The conceptual basis of symptom-focused care at end of life - The role of family support and bereavement services - Ethical and cultural considerations in end-of-life care The course uses readings, case examples, and reflection prompts. Each module ends with applied exercises grounded in the hospice model. This course is written for clinicians, nurses, social workers, chaplains, and other care team members entering or strengthening hospice practice. By the end you will have replaced fragmented impressions of hospice with a structured understanding of its philosophy, structure, and clinical content.
