Foundations of Contact Lens Practice

Contact lens practice rests on understanding corneal physiology, lens materials, and structured patient assessment. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the relevant corneal anatomy and physiology, recognize the major categories of contact lenses, identify the principles of preoperative assessment for lens fitting, and understand the principles of safe lens wear. What you will learn: - The anatomy and physiology of the cornea relevant to lens wear - The categories of contact lenses including soft, rigid gas permeable, hybrid, and scleral - The principles of preoperative assessment including corneal topography - The role of refractive error and how it affects lens selection - Principles of safe lens wear including hygiene, schedules, and risk reduction - Common complications and their early recognition - Patient education frameworks for new and experienced wearers The course uses readings, anatomy summaries, case examples, and reflection questions.
