A competent watchmaker does not simply follow a service checklist — they diagnose. They look at the symptoms a watch presents, form a hypothesis about the cause, and test that hypothesis efficiently before committing to a course of action. This ability to reason from evidence is what separates a technician who services only simple movements from one who can profitably handle the full range of client work. By the end of this course you will be able to diagnose and document complex timekeeping problems across mechanical and quartz movements, plan and execute a service on a movement with a chronograph or automatic winding module, communicate findings and estimates to clients clearly, and situate your practice within the wider professional watchmaking landscape. What you will learn: - Systematic fault diagnosis: building a differential from symptoms — rate error, amplitude loss, intermittent stopping - Automatic winding systems: rotor, reversing wheels, and ratchet mechanism service procedures - Chronograph modules: understanding column-wheel and cam-lever designs, common failure modes - Keyless works wear: diagnosing crown and setting mechanism failures in depth - Shock settings: identifying, testing, and replacing Incabloc and KIF shock absorbers - Client intake and condition reporting: writing accurate condition reports and estimates - Pricing a service: parts cost, time allocation, and market rate awareness - Career pathways: formal watchmaking programs, manufacturer certification, and independent practice This course is organized around diagnostic case studies, each presenting a watch with a documented fault. You will read through the reasoning process — symptom observation, hypothesis formation, targeted inspection, and remedy — for each case, then work through reflection exercises that ask you to apply the same reasoning to novel scenarios. Templates for condition reports and client communication are included, as are annotated service references for automatic and chronograph complications. This course is designed for watchmakers who have completed foundational and hands-on servicing training and are ready to develop professional-level diagnostic and business skills. Prior experience with basic movement service is assumed. This course is educational; complex complication servicing should be approached under qualified supervision, and manufacturer-authorized repair may require specific certification for warranty work.
