Foundations of Astronomy: Stars, Planets, and the Solar System

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wondered how the universe works? Understanding the vastness of space begins with grasping the basic principles governing stars, galaxies, and our planetary neighborhood. This course provides a complete foundational understanding of astronomy, equipping you with the knowledge to identify celestial objects, explain cosmic phenomena, and appreciate humanity's place in the Milky Way galaxy. What you'll learn: * Understand the fundamental definitions and scales used in modern astronomy, from light-years to astronomical units. * Analyze the formation, structure, and classification of stars, including the life cycle of a star like our Sun. * Master the mechanics of our Solar System, including planetary orbits, dwarf planets, comets, and asteroids. * Explore the structure of the Milky Way and the broader universe, including basic concepts of galaxies and cosmology. * Learn the current methods used to detect and classify exoplanets and the basics of modern space exploration. The course begins with essential terminology and definitions before moving into the detailed study of the Solar System, stellar evolution, and galactic structures. Practical examples and written exercises reinforce key concepts throughout the lessons. This course is designed specifically for absolute beginners with no prior knowledge of physics or space science. If you are curious about the universe, this is the perfect starting point.
