Adjusting Course: Changing Majors, Adding Concentrations, and Designing Your Own Path

Many students discover, partway through college, that their original major no longer fits. Others want to add a minor or concentration to broaden options. Still others build interdisciplinary paths across departments. These mid-stream decisions are common and manageable, but they reward strategic thinking. By the end of this course you will be able to evaluate whether changing a major is worth the cost, plan a change that minimizes lost credit and time, design minors or concentrations that meaningfully shift options, and negotiate exceptions when policies stand in the way of a sensible plan. What you will learn: - How to diagnose dissatisfaction: wrong department, wrong instructor cohort, wrong topic, or wrong path - How to compare staying with a partial fit against changing to a stronger fit - How to map credit transfers, prerequisite chains, and remaining course load for a change - How to design minors and concentrations that genuinely change post-graduation options - How to build interdisciplinary paths through self-designed majors or course clusters - How to write proposals and advocate with advisors, department chairs, and registrars - How to communicate a change to parents and sponsors without sounding adrift The course is structured around five applied exercises. Each produces a written artifact: a satisfaction diagnostic, a change-cost analysis, a revised four-year plan, a minor or concentration proposal, and a stakeholder communication plan. This course is written for students at least one year into college who are considering a change. By the end you will move from anxious second-guessing to a structured analysis, and the path you choose for the remaining years will rest on a deliberate plan rather than inertia or panic.
