Pediatric Dental Care for Complex and Special-Needs Patients

Some pediatric dental cases require additional planning because of trauma, medical complexity, or special healthcare needs. This applied course teaches structured approaches to those complex cases. By the end of this course you will be able to apply frameworks to pediatric dental trauma, plan dental care for medically complex children, support children with special healthcare needs, and coordinate care across the dental and medical teams. What you will learn: - Structured assessment and management frameworks for dental trauma in children - Planning considerations for children with congenital heart disease, bleeding disorders, and other systemic conditions - Dental care strategies for children with autism spectrum disorder, intellectual disability, and developmental disorders - Decision frameworks for treatment under sedation or general anesthesia where indicated - Coordination with pediatricians, specialists, and family for shared care planning - Long-term oral health planning for children with chronic conditions - Documentation and family communication standards for complex cases The course is structured around case-based decision modules. Each module presents a complex pediatric case, walks through structured reasoning, and produces a written care plan that you compare against the worked-through example. This course is written for dental residents, pediatric dental trainees, and clinicians caring for medically complex children. It does not replace specialty training or supervised clinical practice. By the end you will have structured frameworks for reasoning about complex pediatric cases and for coordinating care across the dental and medical teams that support these children.
