Foundations of Advanced EMT Practice: Scope, Pharmacology, and Patient Assessment

Advanced EMT practice extends EMT skills with limited medications, advanced airway techniques, and intravenous access. Sound practice begins with an accurate understanding of the AEMT scope, pharmacological principles, and structured patient assessment. This foundational course gives you that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the AEMT scope of practice in general terms, recognize foundational pharmacological principles for AEMT medications, apply structured patient assessment frameworks, and identify decision points in common emergency presentations. What you will learn: - The general scope of practice differences between EMT and AEMT levels - The role of medical direction, protocols, and continuing certification in advanced practice - Foundational pharmacology including routes of administration and drug calculations - Structured patient assessment including primary survey, focused assessment, and ongoing reassessment - Foundational concepts in airway, breathing, and circulation management at the AEMT level - Documentation principles for advanced prehospital care - Communication with receiving facilities and other team members The course uses readings, scope-of-practice summaries, case examples, and reflection questions. Each module ends with applied exercises that you work through using the frameworks presented. This course is written for EMTs preparing for AEMT training or refreshing fundamentals, AEMT students, and emergency responders strengthening their understanding. It does not replace state-approved AEMT training or supervised clinical practice required for certification. By the end you will have a structured foundation in AEMT scope, pharmacology, and assessment that supports sound prehospital reasoning.
