Foundations of Paramedic Practice: Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, and Advanced Assessment

Paramedic practice is the highest level of prehospital care and depends on solid pathophysiology, pharmacology, and structured assessment. This foundational course gives you that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the pathophysiology of common emergency presentations, explain pharmacological principles relevant to paramedic medications, apply structured advanced assessment, and identify decision points across emergency cases. What you will learn: - The pathophysiology of common cardiac, respiratory, neurological, and endocrine emergencies - Pharmacological principles including pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics applied to common paramedic medications - Structured advanced patient assessment including focused histories and physical examination - Foundational concepts in EKG interpretation including rhythm recognition and 12-lead - Advanced airway and ventilation principles - Approaches to shock recognition and management - Documentation and structured communication frameworks at the paramedic level The course uses readings, pathophysiology summaries, case examples, and reflection questions. Each module ends with applied exercises. This course is written for paramedic students, AEMTs preparing for paramedic training, and certified paramedics refreshing fundamentals. It does not replace state-approved paramedic training, hands-on skills verification, or supervised clinical practice required for certification. By the end you will have a structured foundation in the science underlying paramedic practice.
