Foundations of Wilderness EMS: Environment, Improvisation, and Prolonged Care

Wilderness EMS extends prehospital care into environments where standard urban resources are not available. Practice depends on understanding the environment, the constraints of limited resources, and the principles of prolonged patient care. This foundational course gives you that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe how wilderness EMS differs from urban EMS, recognize environmental factors that shape patient care, apply principles of improvised care, and understand the principles of prolonged patient management. What you will learn: - The defining features of wilderness EMS including delayed access, prolonged contact, and environmental exposure - Principles of environmental medicine including heat, cold, altitude, and lightning - Wilderness scope-of-practice considerations and protocol frameworks - Approaches to wilderness-specific equipment and packaging considerations - Principles of improvisation in resource-limited care - The shift from urban definitive-care timelines to prolonged field care - Documentation and communication frameworks in remote environments The course uses readings, environmental physiology summaries, case examples, and reflection questions. Each module ends with applied exercises. This course is written for EMS providers interested in wilderness applications, search and rescue team members, and outdoor professionals supporting medical operations. It does not replace state-approved EMS certification or recognized wilderness medicine credentials. By the end you will have a structured foundation in the principles that distinguish wilderness EMS practice from urban prehospital care.
