Wilderness EMS Team Operations: Search and Rescue, Prolonged Care, and Mission Planning

Long wilderness EMS missions are team operations that depend on disciplined planning, structured communication, and clear decision frameworks. This applied course teaches the team-level work that turns individual skill into effective field operations. By the end of this course you will be able to plan wilderness EMS missions across phases, integrate medical care into search and rescue operations, manage prolonged field care, and structure after-mission reviews. What you will learn: - Mission planning frameworks including pre-mission, en route, on-scene, and recovery phases - Integration of medical care within incident command and search and rescue structures - Decision frameworks for committing teams, scaling response, and requesting outside resources - Prolonged field care frameworks across hours and days including patient comfort, nutrition, and hydration - Team leadership and communication during long missions including fatigue and stress management - Coordination with helicopter operations and other transport assets - After-action review frameworks that produce structured learning across missions The course is structured around six applied modules. Each produces a written artifact: a mission planning template, a team integration sketch, a decision framework outline, a prolonged care plan, a team leadership protocol, and an after-action review template. This course is written for EMS providers and SAR team members preparing for team operations. It does not replace state-approved EMS certification, formal SAR training, or recognized wilderness medicine credentials. By the end you will have structured frameworks for wilderness EMS team operations that support sustainable performance across complex field missions.
