Foundations of Exotic and Wildlife Medicine

Exotic and wildlife medicine spans companion exotics, wildlife rehabilitation, and zoological medicine. Sound practice rests on understanding handling, husbandry, and clinical assessment across diverse species. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the categories of exotic and wildlife patients, recognize the role of handling and husbandry assessment, identify common conditions seen across exotic species, and understand the principles of conservation medicine. What you will learn: - The categories of exotic and wildlife patients including birds, reptiles, small mammals, and aquatic species - The principles of safe handling and restraint across species - The role of husbandry assessment in exotic medicine - Common conditions seen in companion exotic species - Principles of wildlife rehabilitation and release - Principles of zoological and aquatic animal medicine - The principles of conservation medicine and One Health The course uses readings, species summaries, case examples, and reflection questions. Each module ends with applied exercises. This course is written for veterinarians, veterinary technicians, wildlife rehabilitators, and students with interest in exotic and wildlife medicine. It does not replace supervised clinical training, species-specific specialty mentorship, or applicable wildlife permits and licensure.
