Long-Term Digital Safety: From Childhood Through Teen Years

Digital safety evolves as children grow. The risks of a seven-year-old, an eleven-year-old, and a fifteen-year-old are different. This applied course teaches you to adapt your approach across childhood and adolescence. By the end of this course you will be able to adapt digital safety practices across developmental stages, support evolving digital literacy, navigate the shift toward teen autonomy, and sustain communication that lasts into the teen years. What you will learn: - Approaches to early childhood digital exposure including media choices and shared time - Approaches to middle childhood including supervised social platforms and shared devices - Approaches to early adolescence including expanding access with continued involvement - Approaches to teen years including autonomy, trust, and ongoing conversation - Approaches to specific risks that emerge at different ages - Approaches to maintaining open communication about hard topics - Approaches to your own digital habits as a model The course is structured around six applied modules. Each produces a written artifact: a developmental approach document, an evolving family agreement, a communication plan, a specific-risks reference, a parental modeling reflection, and a long-term sustainability plan. This course is written for parents and caregivers thinking across the long arc of childhood. By the end you will have moved from short-term reactions to digital risks to a sustained, developmentally adapted approach.
