Foundations of Adoption and Foster Parenting

Parenting an adopted or foster child involves unique dimensions beyond general parenting. Sound practice rests on understanding the developmental, emotional, and legal aspects of these paths. This foundational course provides that base. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the developmental considerations that often shape adopted and foster children, recognize the role of trauma and attachment, identify the principles of trauma-informed parenting, and understand the systems that surround these families. What you will learn: - The developmental considerations across infants, toddlers, school-age, and teens placed through adoption or foster care - The role of trauma, loss, and disrupted attachment in child experience - The principles of trauma-informed parenting including safety, connection, and predictability - The structure of foster care systems and the role of case workers - The structure of adoption including open, semi-open, and closed arrangements - The role of birth family connections across different arrangements - The role of professional support including trauma-informed therapy The course uses readings, case examples, and reflection prompts. Each module ends with applied exercises. This course is written for adoptive parents, foster parents, and those considering either path. By the end you will have replaced general parenting frameworks with a clearer understanding of what these children often need and the systems that surround them.
