Foundations of Fostering Tween Independence and Responsibility

The tween years are the proving ground for the independence and responsibility that adolescence will require. Sound parenting rests on understanding the principles of scaffolded independence. By the end of this course you will be able to describe the principles of fostering independence, recognize the role of scaffolding, identify the categories of responsibility tweens can take on, and understand the role of natural consequences. What you will learn: - The principles of fostering independence including scaffolding and gradual release - The categories of responsibility including self-care, household, schoolwork, and money - The role of natural consequences as teachers - The role of trust as it is built and tested - The role of failure and recovery in building competence - The principles of communication about responsibilities - The signs that suggest a pause or rebalance is needed The course uses readings, developmental summaries, case examples, and reflection prompts. Each module ends with applied exercises. This course is written for parents of tweens. By the end you will have replaced anxious oversight with a structured approach to building independence.
