The bit about letting a layer dry completely before going over it sounds obvious written down, but it's the thing I was getting wrong every single time. I stopped fiddling and my paintings stopped looking overworked. Turns out most of watercolour is waiting.

Really clear explanations and I finished feeling much more confident. My one small gripe is that I wanted a few more guided exercises to practise each technique before moving on. The theory sometimes felt a step ahead of the practice.

I'd been piecing things together from scattered free tutorials for about a year and kept hitting the same walls. Having it laid out in a sensible order, pigments first, then paper, then what the brush is actually doing, filled in gaps I didn't know I had. The difference in my work after a month was bigger than the whole year before it. The one thing I'd add is a little on composition, because I can now lay down a decent wash but still don't always know where to put things on the page. That's a different skill though, and this never claimed to teach it.

Working light to dark and planning your whites before you start was new to me and it's already saved a few paintings. I just wish there'd been something on masking fluid, since that seems to be the other half of the answer and it barely gets a mention.

A really encouraging place to start and I'm glad I did. I'd have liked a dedicated troubleshooting section for when things go wrong mid-painting, like blooms or hard edges you didn't want. Still, everything it does cover, it covers well.

This is a warm, well-paced start for anyone who's felt too scared to try watercolour, and I mean that as high praise. It builds slowly from pigments and paper up to putting simple scenes together, and I never felt rushed. If I'm honest, the only thing holding me back from full marks is that I'd have loved more worked examples and step-by-step images to compare my own attempts against. Being self-taught before this, I sometimes wasn't sure if my result was 'right' or just different. Even so, it's given me a foundation I can keep building on, and I'm painting most evenings now.

I've wanted to paint since I was a kid but always assumed I had no talent for it. This course starts so far back at the basics that I never once felt out of my depth, beginning with just how pigment and water behave on the page. By the second week I'd painted a simple little landscape with a graded sky and I genuinely couldn't believe I'd made it. It's structured in a way that quietly builds your confidence rather than throwing everything at you at once. For the first time painting feels like something I can actually do rather than admire from a distance.

The suggestion to swatch out every paint I own and label it properly felt like homework at first and I nearly skipped it. I'm glad I didn't. I had eighteen tubes and no real idea what half of them did on paper, and two of them turned out to be nearly identical. Now I reach for a colour on purpose instead of guessing and hoping. Small habit, but it's changed how I start a painting more than any technique did.

The part I keep coming back to is the section on paper. I honestly had no idea that the difference between cold press and hot press could matter so much, and it explained why my earlier attempts kept buckling and pilling. Once I understood weight and texture, everything I painted afterwards improved without me even changing my brushwork. The whole course has this calm, patient tone that makes you want to actually pick up the brush rather than feel intimidated. It respects that you're a beginner without ever talking down to you.

A genuinely gentle introduction that never made me feel stupid for being a beginner. I would have liked a bit more concrete guidance on which paper brands are worth buying, since I found that confusing when shopping. The techniques themselves were explained beautifully.
