Really helpful overall, though some sections repeat the same core message.
Less conflict, more actual cooperation.
What I liked is that it doesn't treat gentle as permissive. You still hold the boundary, you just do it without the shouting match. Our house is noticeably calmer since I started using this.
There's a lot of genuinely useful thinking here about repairing the relationship after a conflict instead of just handing out consequences. The scripts for staying calm during a tantrum have helped me not escalate things the way I used to. My one frustration is that most of the examples focus on one child, and with two very different kids at home I had to do a fair bit of adapting myself. Even so, it gave me a much better foundation than the reward-and-punishment stuff I grew up with.
The connection-first approach makes a lot of sense and I've seen a real shift in how my son responds to me. It does take patience though, and the first couple of weeks were harder before things started to click. Worth sticking with.
No more endless negotiating.
My daughter and I actually talk through problems now instead of fighting.
Tried the conflict resolution approach on my two, who bicker over toys from morning to night, and instead of me playing referee they're starting to sort it out between themselves. Took a good few weeks, but the difference is real.
The reminder that I have to settle myself before I can settle him was uncomfortable to read and exactly what I needed to hear.
I'll be honest, my wife found this and I went along with it expecting soft nonsense. I grew up in a house where you did as you were told or there were consequences, and that was the only script I had. What got through to me was the explanation of what's actually happening in a child's head during a meltdown, because it stopped reading as defiance and started reading as something I could help with. Now when my daughter goes off I crouch down to her level instead of towering over her, and it's over in two minutes instead of twenty. First parenting thing I've ever stuck with.
I was skeptical that 'gentle' could actually work with a strong-willed toddler, but this genuinely reframed how I handle the hard moments. Instead of endless negotiating or eventually snapping, I learned how to hold a clear boundary while staying warm about it. The focus on connection first, correction second, has cut our daily power struggles down to almost nothing. My son seems calmer too, like he's not constantly bracing for a fight.
Short sections you can read in a spare ten minutes and try out the same day, which is about all the bandwidth I have right now.
Good, wish it had more examples.
I came to this after a really rough few months where every request turned into a standoff with my four year old. What clicked for me was the idea that setting a firm boundary and staying connected aren't opposites, you can do both at once. The course gives you actual phrases to use in the heat of the moment instead of vague advice to 'be calm.' I still lose my patience sometimes, but the number of full blown meltdowns has dropped a lot, and honestly so has mine.
I finally stopped shouting to get through the morning routine.
The part on resolving conflict without breaking the connection really stuck with me. I used to think being firm meant being harsh, but this showed me a middle path that actually gets more cooperation, not less.
Calmer me, calmer kid.
My five year old told me she was frustrated instead of chucking her shoe at the wall, and I nearly fell over. That came straight out of the part about naming the feeling out loud before you deal with the behaviour. Small thing, but it's the first time advice from a course has actually turned up in my real life.
Bedtime is not a battle anymore.
The hardest place for me was always in public, where I'd give in just to stop the scene. There's a genuinely practical part about holding a limit while you feel every stranger watching, and it gave me words to use. Last trip to the shops we had a wobble and I got through it without caving or losing my temper.
Changed the whole mood at home.
Reading this shifted something in how I see discipline entirely. It's not about controlling your kid, it's about guiding them while keeping the relationship intact, and the practical steps made that feel doable rather than just a nice idea.
Setting limits without punishing constantly was the piece I was missing.
