As a former primary teacher now homeschooling my two kids, I've seen a lot of reading programmes and this one is refreshingly structured. It follows a proper sequence rather than jumping around, so my children never felt lost. I especially liked how it explains the reasoning behind teaching sounds in a particular order, and how to handle the trickier letter combinations once the basics are solid. Both my four and six year old are progressing at their own pace and, more importantly, they're enjoying it rather than dreading reading time.

The step by step progression is really clear and my daughter is finally decoding simple sentences. I do think it moves a touch fast between some of the stages, so we ended up repeating a couple of them, but that's a minor thing.

I started using this with my five year old who was really struggling and losing confidence with reading. The systematic breakdown of sounds and how to blend them gave me a proper plan instead of me just winging it every evening. Within a month he went from guessing words to actually decoding them, and his frustration has dropped massively. The only thing I'd mention is that it assumes you'll create a fair bit of your own practice material, so be ready to put a little prep in yourself. Beyond that it's been exactly what we needed.

I'm an early years assistant and picked this up to sharpen how I support the children I work with. The explanation of a systematic phonics sequence is genuinely solid and I've already started using the blending techniques with a small group who were falling behind. It gave me the vocabulary and structure to be more consistent, which the kids clearly respond to. If I'm being picky, some of it covered ground I already knew from training, but for anyone starting out with teaching reading it would be a brilliant, clear starting point.
